Choosing Stone For A Walkway

A stone walkway can transform the look and curb appeal of a home.  There are many different types of stone to be considered.  Flagstone, pavers, and cobblestone are just some of the many different types to keep in mind.

Flagstone is a flat irregular stone that is available in both large and small sizes.  Flagstone is perhaps one of the most time consuming of the three stones to install.  This is mainly because their is no set pattern and stones have to be laid into place or cut to squeeze into small areas. Flagstone provide a rustic more natural look that can enhance the surrounding landscape.

Pavers are cut stone that are often available in patterns.  Often times when a DIY homeowner wants to create a easy pathway, this is the most efficient route to go.  However, their may still be cutting involved as the walkway may not always fit perfectly with the pattern.  There are many different colors to choose from, and pavers can be uniform or vary by stone based on the paver you choose.

Cobblestone encompasses two distinctly different rock designs.  There is the smooth rounded cobblestone that will create a walkway reminiscent of the streets of an Italian village.  The other cobbleston

e is a cut rectangular stone.  Both types of cobblestone need to have more permanent foundation like mortar to stabilize the otherwise loose and uneven stone.

The main things to consider when choosing the right type of stone for your walkway, is what type of rock makes the most sense for your landscape and your home.  A formal home may look best with the clean straight lines that pavers offer, while a casual home can be more irregular and natural looking.
